6th Grade Floating Lab Field Trip

Enjoying a beautiful sunny day, the 6th grade headed down the gang-plank to board two boats headed out on the San Diego Bay.  On board, they cast their nets into the bay to drag up various creatures from its depths.  After pulling up their catch, which due to the El Nino included new animals this year including sea horses, porcupine puffer fish, colorful nudibranchs, along with sting rays, giant sea sponges, crabs, flounders and shrimp, the students were able to view the specimens in the boats' on-board touch tanks.  Next up, the students took measurements of the tides, water clarity, and temperature.  They hauled up mud samples and collected plankton specimens to view under a microscope. This field trip coincides with their unit on invertebrates in science class.  Science up-close and personal! What a great day!
